Hand sanitizers with at least 60% alcohol can kill germs like COVID-19 when hand washing isn’t an option. But keep them out of children’s reach--a small amount, if swallowed, can cause poisoning. Some recalled sanitizers also contain toxic methanol.
The concentration of alcohol in hand sanitizers also changes its efficacy, with one study demonstrating that a hand rub with 85% ethanol content was significantly better at reducing bacterial populations compared to preparations of 60% to 62% ethanol.
